SHORASHIM means roots in Hebrew. The annual Shorashim weekend is
dedicated to learning about the roots of Israeli dance. This year it is
fitting that we honor the memory of the "mother" of Israeli folk dance,
Gurit Kadman " (1897-1987). She not only created the Israeli folk dance
movement, beginning with the first Dalia Festival in 1944, but also helped
many ethnic groups in Israel preserve their unique dance heritage. Gurit
choreographed or arranged Israeli folk dances such as Bo Dodi, Hora
Aggadati, Etz Harimon, Hakotzrim Heydad, Ken Yovdu and Mizaray Yisrael,
which are still enjoyed today. To commemorate her 100th birthday,
Shorashim this year will focus on dance derived from Jewish communities
around the world and Israeli folk dances that have been influenced by this
heritage. Ethnic dance workshops in the day will focus on the following
Jewish communities: Eastern European Sephardic Yemenite Kurdish Bukharian
Workshop teachers include Ayalah Goren-Kadman, daughter of Gurit Kadman
and one of Israel's foremost folk & ethnic dance experts from Jerusalem's
Rubin Academy, and Hadassah Badoch-Kruger, from Yemen and former principal
soloist with the Inbal Yemenite Dance Theater of Israel. They will be
joined by Felix Fibich, star of stage and screen from Warsaw and the
worlds expert on Eastern European Jewish dance, together with other famous
ethnic dance personalities such as Michael Alpert with his Klezmer band
who performs with Izhak Perlman and brought Klezmer to the David Letterman
Show,Judith Brin Ingber, an expert on Sephardic dance whose ensemble ,
Voices of Sepharad, performed in Spain to commemorate the 500th
anniversary of the expulsion, Jill Gellerman, a dance ethnographer
specializing in womens' Hassidic dance and the Shashmaqam ensemble of
Jewish musicians and dancers from Bukhara in Central Asia. In addition to
ethnic dance programs, repertoire folk dance workshops will be offered by
the ever-popular Danny Pollock. Exciting folk dance parties are scheduled
nightly (starting Saturday after Shabbat through Monday night), with many
surprise dance leaders from the U.S. and Israel.

Shorashim 1997 returns to its roots in New York City to celebrate the 10th
anniversary of Rikuday Dor Rishon Sunday night dance sessions. Local
dancers have an opportunity to participate at a much lower cost than at a
camp. The large dance hall is air-conditioned with a wooden floor and
located near many ethnic or kosher restaurants, hotels, parks, cultural
sites and a big flea market. A list will be provided to visitors,
including low hotel rates. Early registration discounts are offered as are
daily or session rates. For further information and application contact
