The melody is a ubiquitous folksong found all over Europe.
Samuel Cohen, an immigrant from Moldavia to Rishon LeTsiyon, a pioneer
Zionist settlement in Erets Yisrael, began to sing Imber's poem in 1882 to
the tune of Carul Cu Boi, a peasant folksong that he remembered from his
native land.
It caught on!
