In the Jewish tradition, a "Nigun" can be described as a shimmering
term that generally refers to a melody, a syllable less song in the
synagogue or a chassidic hymn.

The Nigun organization, whose present residence is in Muelheim, was
founded in December, 1995 by a group of interested people from the
western area of the "ruhrgebiet". These people dedicated their work to
the broad field of Jewish music through concepts, other academic
events, research and the construction of an archive.

Nigun's concept of Jewish music in it's broadest sense, refers to
musical statements by Jewish authors, or non-Jewish authors who write
about a Jewish theme. The organization will be focusing on the
following themes:

  - Organization and financing of Jewish music (as defined by the Nigun
    organization) concerts.
  - Organization and financing of the lectures on Jewish music.
  - Archiving of sheet music which might also be published.
  - Archiving of audio documents (videos, audio cassettes, schellack-
    records and phonograph waltzes).
  - Archiving of written documents (books, periodicals and
    magazines).
  - Sponsorship of artists who deal with the interpretation of Jewish
    music.
  - To conceptualize, apply and implement the research for the
    documentation of Jewish music.
