FOLK & ETHNIC MUSIC & DANCE SEMINAR TOUR
IN PRAGUE, POLAND & ISRAEL
with visits to folk & ethnic groups in each country
featuring the 6-day Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow
& the 3-day Karmiel Dance Festival in Israel
JUNE 20 - JULY 14, 1996
The program in Eastern Europe will include visits to important Jewish
sites in and around Prague, Krakow and Warsaw. Visits will be arranged
with individuals and groups involved with Jewish folk and ethnic culture,
especially those who have expertise in music and/or dance. In addition,
visits with local Jewish communities will provide opportunities to
participate together in informal evenings of music and dance. A highlight of
the Eastern European segment will be attending the Jewish Culture Festival in
Krakow, Poland (which was recently featured as the setting of the PBS
special, "Itzhak Perlman: In the Fiddler's House"). Some of the best
Klezmer groups perform at this festival and workshops on Jewish dance are
taught by Michael Alpert (who recently brought Klezmer to network TV on the
David Letterman Show).
The program in Israel will include meetings with and/or performances by
individuals and groups throughout the country arranged by Ayalah
Goren-Kadman. An authority on Israeli folk culture, Ayalah currently directs
ethnic dance studies at the prestigious Rubin Academy of Music and Dance
in Jerusalem. On site visits to various ethnic communities will allow
participants to experience the traditional music and dances of Yememite,
Kurdish, Georgian, Ethiopian, Arab and Druze communities, among others.
A highlight of the program will be the three-day Karmiel Dance Festival.
Besides a vast variety of dance activities, the Festival also includes live
music performances by ethnic groups and Israeli stars (e.g., Shoshana Damari).
Participation in the Seminar is open primarily to a select number
of individuals who already have some knowledge of folk and ethnic culture.
Priority is given to teachers, performers and leaders who wish to enrich their
professional background. Others will be admitted on a space available basis.
