SOME WORDS ABOUT: WOLF (written by Vivien Smith for Wolf's Bio)
Though DJ Alfredo of WPIX once called him "New York's first and only
underground kosher rocker," Wolf prefers to elaborate. "Being the child of
a Holocaust survivor pervades every facet of my life. Especially my
music." This intense, mystical songwriter, guitarist, singer captivates
audiences with his focused delivery of stripped-down guitar based melodic
alternative rock.
Unfazed by fleeting trends, Wolf's lifelong obsession with man's potential
to build and destroy has marked him as a driven man. With the worldwide
acclaim of Steven Spielberg's epic film, Schindlers List, Wolf is
convinced that a potentially huge parallel market exists for his music.
"The international success of Schindlers List reinforced my basic belief
that millions of people of differing nationalities all subscribe to three
basic tenets; That survival is a universal knee-jerk response, that
genocide is universally abhorrent and that history is probably doomed to
repeat itself. My music addresses each one of these topics in one fell
swoop."
A New Jersey native, Wolf began his musical career writing dark songs
reflecting the despair of being a uniquely aware teenager. "Hearing
Jim Morrison sing "The End" and listening to my late grandfather, the
cantor sing "Kol Nidre" on Yom Kippur night each had a similar spooky
effect on me," he explains, citing David Byrne, Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, Tom
Verlaine, Garland Jeffreys, The Stones, Jonathan Richman, Alan Vega,
Warren Zevon and Lou Reed as early influences.
Living in the Mideast for nearly one and a half years made a marked
impression on Wolf's lifestyle and music. What followed was a series of
dates in college auditoriums and coffee houses opening up and backing up
some of Israel's more well known performers. "This outrageous boy," wrote
one reviewer, "howls, whispers, jumps, screams and chants with just his
voice and his guitar. He's an American with a distinctly Jewish message -
which gives me hope as an Israeli. If Bob Dylan went to Yeshiva he might
say what Mr. Wolf says."
Wolf's song stylings have a common thread. "My litmus test for nearly all
of my music is the temporary deletion of all instruments except the voice.
If a sole acapella voice can sing it, I go with it - it's that simple."
Listeners are immediately drawn to Wolf's joltingly original lyrics - song
poems unto themselves.
Back in the States, Wolf formed a group called Pontiac Rosenbloom and the
Exiled. He landed a 2 month after-hours gig at the now legendary Club 82.
Interestingly, Wolf drew a disproportionately high number of Hells Angels
to his shows. They validated Wolf's belief once and for all - that his
music kicked ass with no apologies. It was during a late night performance
that Santana's original drummer, Michael Shreive approached Wolf, clearly
moved by what he had witnessed. Two weeks later they were in the studio
working on a recording together.
In spite of a series personal setbacks, Wolf never turned away from his
commitment to music. "Through my divorce, the loss of my family,
possessions and position, the music remains my life raft - my only hope.
My singular compelling purpose."
Enlisting some of New York's finest alternative, underground players, Wolf
has produced a skeletal recording for willing listeners. "These players
have played with the best - Dylan, Joan Jett, Billy Idol, Talking Heads,
John Cale, Chris Spedding - you name em," he says. "They were genuinely
excited about recording my songs. They said it was different than anything
they had ever done."
Wolf is candid about his potential market. " If DJ Vin Scelsa, host of
K-Rocks "Idiot's Delight" show knew about me, he'd have me on every
Sunday." Wolfs off-center guitar driven music would sound right at home on
the show that plays host to some of this generations more intelligent AOR
alternative musicians.
Wolf understands the delicate balance of approaching sensitive subject
matter in a rock and roll context. "It was Elie Weisel who said that the
children of Holocaust survivors have the word "Remember" etched into their
foreheads," he explains. "It's not like I have a choice in remembering
what my father and so many others witnessed. Conversely, ignoring this
legacy, would lead to self denial of the highest order."
Wolf has issued a clear stern warning to skinheads, hate mongers and
anti-semites. "It disgusts me hearing these hate messages being plugged on
the airwaves. Just don't cross me with that hate stuff - I'm one of those
Jews who fights back."
Wolf's current lineup includes some impressive sidemen. Billy Ficca,
percussion, known best as the timekeeper for the underground legendary
band TELEVISION brought Wolf back into play mode after hearing him at a
NYC open mike night. Clint Bahr, bass player, who has worked with everyone
from Ron Wood to Wild Turkey (Jethro Tull off-shoot) holds the botom down
for the pack. Elroy P. Jones, guitarist & producer has worked with Chuck
Berry and was an original member of Pontiac Rosenbloom & the Exiled.
He's an explosion waiting to happen. From a whisper to a scream, Wolf's
everyman voice touches the hearts of listeners, young and old, regardless
of race or background. Forever crossing boundaries, his is a voice for the
exiled and downtrodden. WOLF invites you into his world of angst and
celebration - so prepare yourself for hard rocking music that lights the
torch of remembrance with a flaming sound you will never forget.
