Music of the Holocaust

Northeastern University in Boston is presenting a symposium
on the music of the Holocaust on November 19 and 20.
On Saturday night, November 19 we will present the opera, THE
EMPEROR OF ATLANTIS, written in the Terezin concentration camp
by Viktor Ullmann and Petr Kien. It's a satirical piece in the
manner of the Brecht/Weill collaborations. Ours will be the
first American performance (in the authorized edition) of this
work that was composed in 1944 but banned by the Nazis and never
performed in the camp.

On Sunday, November 20 we will present a series of lectures on the
remarkable case of the musicians of Terezin. Speakers will
include David Bloch from the University of Tel Aviv,
Hillel Kieval of the University of Washington, and two survivors
of the Terezin ghetto -- Eliska Kleinova and Paul Kling.

On Sunday night, the Zamir Chorale will perform a program of choral and
solo vocal works written in Terezin and in the other ghettos and
camps during the second world war.
