Re: Klezmer on hammer dulcimer

There are some pioneering players now practicing and defining the performance
of the Yiddish tsimbl (hammer dulcimer) both here and in Europe. There are
Stuart Brotman in L.A. , Kim Goldoff in Seattle (who's also playing a replica
of Gusikov's "shtroyfidl"), "Doc" Fribush in Chapel Hill, North Carolina,
Paul Morrissett in New York and Judy Barlas in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This
"tsimbl" community met and formed at "KlezKamp", among many other young,
innovative players. The 10th annual KlezKamp, will be this December 25-30th.

I wouldn't recommend the Muzikas record; it's not at all representative of
"Yiddish" style instrumental playing. Listen to Andy Statman's and Zev
Feldman's "Jewish Klezmer Music" (Shanachie) or to my 78 rpm anthologies
"Klezmer Music 1910-1942" (Folkways) or "Klezmer Pioneers: European and
American Recordings 1903-1956" (Rounder) for wonderful period recordings.
