Israeli Music Sources (SUMMARY)

Here is the information on sources for Israeli music in the
US. Thanks to everyone that answered. (It is amazing how much help
you can get from the net when we take time out from the endless SCJ
discussions).

- Hatikvah (Tel: (213) 655-7083) in LA

They have a collection of over 1000 cassettes or CDs of Israeli
music. Cassettes are 8.95 (shipping charge is 1.50) and the variety
is amazing. They don't have a catalog since they keep receiving
stuff everyday. I ordered from them and received the stuff in three
days with a handwritten list of the latest stuff that had arrived to
the store. The owner talked to me for about 1/2 hour telling me the
latest releases. (As Leigh Guren said - this guy gives great
personal service!!).

- Nefesh Ami (Tel: (516) 933-2660) in Hicksville, NY

They have a big variety of music (e.g.: israeli, yiddish, hasiddic,
etc.) They also carry books, videos, language courses and other
stuff. Cassettes are 10.95 and CDs are 17.95. They have a nice
catalog.

- Culture International (Tel: (415) 855-9545) in San Jose, CA.

I called and they promised to fax their catalog. I have not received
it yet.

- Original Music (Tel: (914) 756-2767) in Tivoli, NY

They carry all types of international music. However, they don't
have a big selection of Israeli music. They also promised a catalog
that has not arrived yet.

The actual responses are included below. Thanks again!!

"Poogy" and "Spipurie Poogy" were hit albums for the Israeli group
"Kaveret" in the 70's. Last summer their songs came out on CD with
previously unrecorded material. This summer they are having a
reunion tour. Many of the members of the group have had successful
solo careers such as Giddy Gov, Danny Sanderson, etc.

Also, "T-Slam" a popular group in the early 80's has started a
reunion tour. Opening for them are the hot group of this summer
"No'ar Shulayim". I heard the concert that they played last night
in Rishon L'zion on the radio.

"Mashina" is comming out with a new album, some of the songs have already
been playing on the radio.

Arik Einstein has achieved Platinum for his album of children's songs.
He still is not preforming. Some of the material on the album was written
by Yonatan Gefen and Yoni Rechter.

Caspi is having marital problems. He has appeared recently with Shlomo
Gronich and as a solo.

Hanoch has been quiet. I'm not sure what he's doing at the moment.

Shlomo Artzi has another double album out. He is trying to book his
success on his previous hit double album, "Hom Yuli-Ogust."

I heard Tower Records in NYC carries most new Israeli records, etc.
Maybe you can get them sent UPS or some other way.

I, too am a big fan of modern Israeli pop. I have about
30 tapes, mostly bought in NYC or Israel. I would be very interested
in any information about sources for buying tapes.
I do know of one mail order source for compact disks (found by
perusing the ads in the NYC-based newspaper "Israel Shelanu"). It is:

        Culture International
        P.O. Box 610878
        San Jose, CA 95161-0878
        Tel/FAX (415) 855-9545

They charge on a sliding scale of $18 for the first three disks,
down to $12 for each disk after number 35. They also have a minimum
order of $100. Their selection seems to be pretty complete, given
that most Israeli music isn't out on CD yet. It compares well to
what I saw in Israeli record stores a few weeks ago.

Hi,

Well i'm not a big music fan, so I can't help you out too much -
However, I do know that "Poogi" or "Kaveret" as they're now known are
making a comeback concert tour this summer here in Israel with all
the regulars...Dani Sanderson et. al.

If you don't get replies from anyone else let me know, 'cos my wife
is into the music scene and I could get more info. for you through
her. I think Arik Einstein is still very popular here.

I looked in the local Yellow Pages, and the only store that explicitly
advertises delivery abroad is a Chasidic music store in Jerusalem.

You may try writing to the production companies (e.g. CBS, EMI) - your
records probably have the addresses on the back cover.

Shalom!

Another soul who remembers Poogy!? Yeah!

I live in Santa Barbara (at least, my house hadn't burned down when I
left for work this morning...), and often go to a great record store
in LA called HaTikvah. The owner, Simon, is a real "bachur nichmad" -
a mensch, you know? He will ship stuff to you anywhere. If you order
tapes or CDs, the shipping cost is minimal.

He has everything - Shalom Hanoch, Haim Moshe, Shlomo Artzi, Arik
Einstien, Adam, you name it. Great stuff, all the latest, hottest
albums, and also the old favorites.

Don't know the number off the top of my head. It will be in the 213
area code, the store is located on Fairfax Ave. in Los Angeles, so you
could get the number by calling LA information (213-555-1212) and
asking for HaTikvah. Simon will send you a catelog, or just chat with
you on the phone, and ship anything you like (he'll take a credit card
number). Most of his CDs are in the 16-19 buck range, tapes a lot
cheaper.

I *love* this music. Most American Jews know nothing about it. NY
and LA are hot spots for it ONLY because of all the Israelis who live
there. Recently went to a Haim Moshe concert in LA - we were the only
Americans in the whole theater!

One word of warning - Simon does not speak Hebrew, (typical American
Jew), but he knows his music.

Best of luck!
