Andrew, I think you're overstating the case against "world music."
I certainly agree that Ofra Haza's earlier recordings are my
favorites, but also feel that the "world music" label has introduced
and popularized a number of wonderful groups from around the world
At the same time, "world music" doesn't mean "music from around
the world." It appears to mean "we can synthesize dance music from
around the world," a considerably less-interest9ing endeavor, I'll grant.
I get more excited by the unlabeled, "world folk music" groups, of
whom "Hynotic Clambake" sounds like a member. This group includes
bands like "Boiled in Lead," "Brave Combo," and my personal
faves, "3 Mustaphas 3." I really like the way a growing number
of musical groups are blending various kinds of music.
