more on Jewish Classical

So, I was hanging out a bit at "Afikomen: Jewish books and records," the
shop friends of mine own. and I hear this classical music on the store
system. "Hey," I complain, "what is this stuff? This is Jewish?"

My friend gets a bit of a goofy look on his face and shows me a cassette
of Rennaisance music by Jewish composers, including Rossi. This might be
one of the recordings that Mark Kirschbaum mentioned last week. I'll try
to get details next week. Sounded nice. He says to me, "You know the
traditional Ashkenazic version of Adon Olam you sing in shul? Well, this
cassette has a version that predates it by a hundred years!"

And of course, to my ears, much of what Voice of the Turtle does has more
to do with nice chamber music than sounds that I identify readily as
"Jewish." Still, it is very, very nice, and their musicianship has gotten
very good.

I note these things, but in my heart of hearts, it's really that amalgam
music like modern klez and the blues that keep me going :-).
