I have to disagree with you on having enough instruments for Kindergartners,
etc. I find it a very good lesson for kids to have to "wait," "share," and
"listen." By not playing an instrument, they help me listen to see if the
kids are playing correctly (sometimes I'll say "We're only playing on Part
'B' as in the song "Achshav" where you have the first part and then the
'Tumba' chorus). Gives me a chance to not only teach them jewish songs,
but teach them something about music in general (binary form). So don't
feel like everyone just has to be kept busy. They'll actually become
better musicians by being sensitive listeners.
I've also found that 6-7-8th graders do indeed love to play shaker eggs,
claves and all the other instruments mentioned. The most important one
though, as I always tell them, is their voice and too much percussion will
drown out their sound if they're not paying attention to their singing.
Of course these instruments also work wonders for the kids who really don't
enjoy singing, but have great rhythm. Bottom line is..... have fun!
