Janice,
You are correct in what you say about small Jewish communities. I grew up in
one and I continue to live in one. I am always very concerned about making
things known and acccessible to Jews who live in isolated places. A major
reason that I started Jewish Entertainment Resources was to let the Jewish
world know that there are lots of choices out there for hearing (both live and
on recording) Jewish music. We maintain a web site
(http://www.jewishentertainment.net) that lists about 100 different Jewish
performers. We also host a Jewish concert calendar at the web site that tells
where people are performing. Also many performers now have their own web
sites. If communities have access to the web, they can see what is out there.
One thing that would help greatly would be if venues would send their dates
into our calendar for posting. I do the best I can in my spare (ha ha) time.
But if performers and organizations would send me their dates on a regular
basis, I could post them on the calendar for FREE. My goal for this calendar
is to have it be the place people look to find what is going on of a Jewish
nature in their community or places they may travel.
Although, we are a small community, I have managed to bring one Jewish
performer a year here for the past 10 years. I become aware of who might be
traveling somewhere close to here and then I try to see if we can work a block
booking. I have a few families here who consider Jewish music so important
that they have set up a fund to do this each year. I also volunteer alot of my
time to make this happen. We have brought David Syme, Doug Cotler, Steve
Dropkin, Alhambra, Gerry Fierst, the Klezmer All Stars, Robbo and San Slomovits
to name a few -- all in a community of less than 100 Jewish families! So, it
can be done. We all need to work together. Sharing is everything.
Please, anyone and everyone, send me your dates. Let's let people know how
much is going on in the world of Jewish Entertainment.
Judy :)
