[HANASHIR:3979] RE: HANASHIR digest 663

To Brian and all others interested in cantorial studies:

there are various ways to go about this. The best, as Judah mentioned, is
to apply to one of the wonderful programs that exist in New York - both
Hebrew Union College and Jewish Theological Seminary offer great and fully
accredited programs leading to investiture as well as an academic degree.
For information about the School of Sacred Music (HUC) please contact Cantor
Israel Goldstein at (212) 674-5300. Within the Reform movement, the only
other way to become a "certified" cantor, and a full member of the American
Conference of Cantors, is to go through the certification program. This
program is administrated by the ACC in conjunction with Hebrew Union
College-School of Sacred Music. The entry requirements are quite rigorous,
once you are accepted as an associate member of the ACC, you have 5 years to
study with mentors and fulfill all the requirements for the final
certification exam. For more details about the ACC associate membership
category, please contact Cantor Alane Katzew at (914)235-1800. (By the way,
there is no such thing as a "soloist's" certificate, or degree. Anyone can
use the title soloist...)

The Cantors Assembly (Conservative movement) has a similar certification
program. I do not know all the details, but you might want to contact the
CA at (212) 678-8834.
Pursuing the cantorate as a profession is a wonderful thing and I hope you
will look into this seriously. If I can be of any further help, please be
in touch!

L'shanah Tovah Um'tukah!
Josee
