[HANASHIR:3963] RE: HANASHIR digest 662

LEchi - Cheek - is spelled with a chet. L'chi - Go - is spelled with a chaf -
so there's really no connection between the two. You are correct regarding
the pronounciation. HOWEVER - I do want to point out that many Israelis have
taken to pronouncing the one written with a chaf - the feminine command "Go"
- as LEchi, especially when they're annoyed and want to emphasize it. (E.G.
"LEchi mipo, metumtemet!!") Since language is fluid, and things change, and
that particular thing seems to be in a state of flux, that is one "nitpicky"
issue I wouldn't be too troubled with, frankly. Also - while "LEchi (chet)
lach" DOES, technically, mean "You have a cheek," there is absolutely NO
Israeli who would express it in that manner. (Foresooth!! Thou hast a cheek!)
That sentence construction is archaic - biblical - and not in use in modern
Hebrew. Verily, 'tis wise to "pick" one's battles (or nits) with due care.
(The above, being offered with a smile - :o) - and a wink - ;o) - )

I hope everyone had an easy fast and is enjoying a wonderful High Holiday
season.
