[HANASHIR:3918] Re: Youth Choir music (and a Lechi Lach ?)

When I was helping lead my Temple's junior choir, we really stuck to basic
stuff. The prayers and a few extras, but the kids, the parents, and the
congregation really loved it. I know they did Oyfn Pripochek (sp) and the
older members of the Congregation got a kick out of it, and it was nice to
do some Yiddish with them. I know sometimes, we would teach some harmonys to
the older kids, and since there were two of us leading, one could do the
melody, and one could help with the harmony. But the main thing is not to
worry so much about if they sound perfect or not, but to remember that
they're being exposed to the music, they and their families are coming to
services, and that they're having fun. Junior choir was one of my favorite
parts of the job, and I'm working with the rabbi to start one here. Anyway,
Eitz Chaim Hi/Tree of Life with the round was always fun, and they liked
Lechi Lach a lot.
Oh, that brings me to another question. I was talking to the rabbi here in
Tucson, where I am now (I was in Denver, but now I'm at school in Tucson)
anyway, he said Lechi Lach, which is how we sing it, is really L'chi, with
the accent on the last syllable, and I know everyones getting in trouble for
pronunciation arguments, but the L'chi makes sense, so, does Lechi mean
anything, and if so, what are we saying? So that's my question, anyway, good
luck with the choir, and I hope everyone is having a great High Holy Days
Shana Tovah,
Joel Simon
