[HANASHIR:3917] Youth Choir music

Let's say you had a group of 25 very enthusiastic kids of varying ages and
musical abilities in a youth choir. (I do!) They sound best singing in
unison or singing rounds because the youngest kids are just in third grade
and don't yet read music or Hebrew and aren't real strong when singing
transliteration. The oldest are 7th and 8th graders and think they're
pretty good because they also sing in their middle school choirs. You have
the kids for less than 30 minutes about 3 times a month. They'll sing at 4
Shabbat services during the year and at some Sunday morning Religious School
services, too.

What are some songs you think are real winners?

I'll start. My kids love Julie Silver's V'ahavta (which is in English) and
Jeff Klepper's Prayer Is Reaching and Ellen Allard's Thank You. They did
great with the round, Sing It In. I know they'll love Karen Daniel's Keep
Shabbat/V'shamru and Sing A Song About A Rainbow and Lisa & Lynn's We Are
All Candles. And they'd better like the round We Give You Thanks that I
wrote for them!

BTW, I also have each grade from PreK/K through 4th sing at a Shabbat
service during the year. I find it very easy to pick music for them because
I can choose something that's very age-appropriate.

Thanks for sharing! -- Carol
