[HANASHIR:3823] Re: Music Business Conference

Shalom Chaverim,

I just got back from attending a wonderful Roots Music Business Conference in
New
Orleans this past week. There was a small crowd there so we had lots of
individual time to spend networking and meeting top managers, A &R execs, media
people, etc. I wanted to share with you some of the highlights of the
Conference
and hope that you will feel free to use me as a resource person. As the
Director
of Jewish Entertainment Resources, I am always striving to make the Jewish music
community more aware of Jewish talent and make Jewish performers more aware of
ways to market their talents. Here are some of the highlights of the
Conference:

1) attended a one-day seminar on grant writing and grant sources

2) Met with a rep. from BMI and I have several booklets which might be
very helpful to those of you who are writing your own music :
"A Guide to Music Publishing Terminology", "Songwriters and
Copyright Q &A", and "Handbook for Songwriters, Composers and Music
Publishers" -- if you would like a copy of these mini-booklets, please
let me know.

3) Met with the people who have begun the first Musicians Health Clinic
in the country at LSU in New Orleans. They will be the pilot for others
around the country where musicians can go for preventative care on a
sliding payment scale. In addition to providing health care, their
mission is to let young, emerging musicians know about the health risks
associated with the music business (hearing loss, carpel tunnel,
substance abuse, etc.) so that they can prevent them.

4) Purchased some incredible resource books:
Star Tracks: Principles for Success in the Music and Entertainment
Business by Larry Wacholtz
The Musicians Business and Legal Guide by Mark Halloran -- in fact
my partner, David, attended an entire 3-day session on legal matters
affecting the sports and entertainment fields (contracts, publishing,
taxes, management, distribution, etc.)
And the book you all should have in your library -- How to Be Your
Own Booking Agent & Save Thousands of Dollars by Jeri Goldstein. This
is one of the best books I have ever seen for those who want to do more
for themselves and get their name and their talents out there. I spent
alot of time with Jeri at the Conference and was able to get lots of her
expert advice for free. If you would like a copy of this book, let me
know and I will send you an order form so you can order it directly from
Jeri. Of all the materials I have purchased in my career as a
performer, this one is by far, the most information packed and honest.
It is almost 500 pages of incredible information for anyone who
performs. It includes sample contracts, resource lists and one of the
things I like best about it --- it is extremely well organized and easy
to use.

Please feel free to contact me if you want any further information on
any of the things I have mentioned.

Judy :)
