I do what Rabbi Richard suggests. Yes, the congregation still asks for older
melodies, but many are learning and liking the newer ones. Since there seems
to be singing from the congregation when we do do newer versions obviously
someone is singing besides us. However, I think an important point is to
teach the songs to the congregation so that the members feels comfortable
with the newer melodies before being asked to sing them in a service. Thanks
for the discussion, both of you. Margie

Wow-
I thought Susan was writing about my congregation 6 years ago--
Don't worry-- Take charge-- YOU are the leader---
Take one or two songs a service-- Teach them to the choir- then teach them
to the congregation. Then sing them in the service.
How many times, when we sing the High Holiday Sh'ma or Barchu do we hear "I
want the traditional ones"-- but for HH that is traditional.
For Shabbat try a few other things.
Example--- Debby Friedman's Sh'ma and V'ahavta-
Some of Wally Schachet-Briskin's music
What responses and melodies are you trying to teach them.
