Your opinions are well taken, however I do not think that because we have our
opinions we can/should ignore what traditons have been set before us. In fact
the discussion on L'cha Dodi has been informative as to what the tradition
is. Put aside for a moment that we are songleaders, musicians and teachers.
As Jews we have an obligation to know the tradition and then make informed
personal decisions. Now as a teacher of Judaism how much more so do you have
that obligation. Now if you want to sing L'cha Dodi Saturday morning that's
your right I suppose as an individual. The members of the list wit contrary
thoughts will not jump out of the computer and break your guitar strings. But
I believe you become a better "conduit" of the total picture and the task at
hand (being a teacher) if you are knowledgeable first. There are many places
to get more knowledge on all subjects. This list can be a place to get
answers to more specific questions that pertain to us as teachers of Jewish
music. I don;t think we should be upset with answers that follow tradition,
but rather use the information as we see fit.
