[HANASHIR:3511] Re: L'cha Dodi

At my oldest daughter's Bat Mitzvah several (8) years ago, her opening song
at the Saturday morning service was L'cha Dodi. While our Rabbi told her
that traditionally this was sung at Friday night services to welcome the
Shabbat, he didn't tell her she couldn't use it since it was a song she
knew and really liked. However, our Rabbi is very good about allowing the
Bar or Bat Mitzvah student to have the service choices they want. So
again, it probably depends on the preference of the Rabbi/congregation.
Although songs like L'cha Dodi and Shalom Alechem add to the beauty and
mystic qualities of Kabbalat Shabbat, they aren't necessarily sung at every
Friday night service. I agree with Rick, why not continue to welcome the
bride on Saturday, too? Maybe not always. Just my couple of pennies
worth.

Of course my daughter's Bat Mitzvah service was long before I became
heavily involved in Jewish music, and she did use Tefillat Haderech as an
anthem rather than closing song. But it was a beautiful service, even if
not musically "correct"!
