Shir is actually a masculine word, so it would be Hava Nashirim, if we're
going to quibble about it...but then again that syntax makes no sense in
Hebrew anyway.
In terms of keeping the spirituality in what we do, I always harken back to
a lesson Debbie has always taught at Hava Nashira all these years: what we
are teaching is text. And we know what "text" she means. One cannot
recognize that they are teaching Torah and Judaism through song without
feeling Gd's presence-which, I guess, is how one might define
"spirituality."
Every year at CAJE, there is always an undercurrent of "why do the evening
performers and entertainers get such special treatment - and the teachers
during the day get so little?" I always remind people that those of us who
songlead, sing, perform, etc. through Jewish music are doing some of the
most profound and important teaching there is.

completely lost my voice for what seems like forever afterwards. In the
past couple years, it was so frustrating because all I wanted to do when I
got home was sing, and I
