[HANASHIR:3237] RE: hello everybody

You deal with the "kid who hates music" in a similar manner as you deal with
other problem campers. For example: make the kid who is always the straggler
the line leader. Make the kid who is always talking the "quiet" monitor.

So for music: give the kid who hates music some important role-like
percussion, or "keeper of the music" or "official music or percussion
instrument distributor" etc. Write a special song with a special part just
for this kid-find out something he/she really likes-some sport, some color,
some cartoon, whatever-and put it in a song and give this kid a part in it
that's crucial and involves that favorite thing.

Maybe you can let this person be the "choir leader" for a minute, or teach a
song they know.

And if they simply won't cooperate, put 'em in a time out. Don't let them
push you around-be in charge. Too many counselors, in a desparte attempt to
make the kids like them try too hard to not enforce rules and discipline.
This well meaning but misguided effort hurts everyone in he long run.

I use some rules with my campers

1. No whining.
2. No whining.
3. No whining.
4. No whining.

Works most of the time.

Adrian

Subject: [HANASHIR:3236] hello everybody

Hey all today was the first day of my camp here in Kansas City! Of
course- Over the weekend I broke my toe so I was on medication which "may
induce drowsiness" and the space I was promised was in use so I was out
in the sun- busy being burnt to a crisp! I taught Craig's L'cha Dodi and
everybody loved it. Also, I don't know if Ira you're on this list but we
had lots of fun with "Sunscreen" as well. It was overall positive, not
so much dancing and ruach as HN but gotta save SOMETHING for later right?
Actually, question: How do you all deal with a kid who comes in
determined to hate music? I mean these are kids I only see once a week.
Well Bye all!
                        Callie
