[HANASHIR:2882] from UAHC camps to Ramah

Hello all,
I sadly will not be attending Hava Nashira this summer, but for a very good
reason...which brings me to my question for you.
This summer (as of June 1!) I will be in Clayton, Georgia at the new Ramah
Camp there, working as Rosh Shirah. In the 3 years that Ramah-Darom has
been in existence, there has not been a shira program to speak of, and I
was hired to revive/create one. If you're not familiar with Ramah camps,
they are the official camps of the Conservative movement. They are excited
that someone like me who was bred as a "reform songleader" is coming to a
Ramah camp...I see the summer as a grand experiment: what can I bring from
my UAHC Camp experience that will be useful at Ramah?
Now, here is where you come in: Is there anyone here who has, as I have,
background working in Reform summer camps, who has then gone on to direct
music programs in other movements' camps? Or vice versa (from other
movements to UAHC Camps)? What sage advice have you? I have never been to
a Ramah camp, but what I have perceived as the major differences are: a
strict observance of Shabbat and Kashrut, and a commitment to using hebrew
language as much as possible: announcements in the dining hall are all in
hebrew, for example.
My question is not so much about repertoire as method, and perhaps only a
few people may be able to address this issue: what has 'worked' and 'not
worked' from setting to setting, from summer camp to summer camp? I
currently work for hebrew schools and synagogues for 4 different movements,
and am learning a lot--however my question is specifically about camp.
Does anyone have any advice?
Thanks
Joanna
