[HANASHIR:2671] Re:Yom ha'atzmaut prep

Wow, Rich, what a topic!!!

My two cents: Being 47, I am almost as old as the state of Israel. In my
"formative" years, my connection to Israel was mostly through the songs we
learned. Since there were wars, it seemed, every few years, there were a ton
of songs about patriotism and defense and Jerusalem. We were genuinely
worried about the very EXISTENCE of the state of Israel, and most American
Jews gave it unanimous, unquestioning support.

Now that Israel's existence is established, and it has gained respect among
many of the nations of the world, American Jews no longer feel the threat.
They have moved on to concerns about their fellow Jews here at home, and many
other issues. So..the question is how to move people emotionally today in
the same way they were moved spiritually in years past?

I believe that the ONLY way to do this is to teach people about the history
of modern Israel. A "montage" ("collage"? "medley"?) of songs tracing
Israel's history from the early settlement days of the Yishuv (Anu Banu
Artza), through the wars of independence...up to modern times...would be a
nice thing that I am going to do here in South FL.

Just an idea...

Brian
