As for repetition, this question has been raised in this discussion group 
many times.
According to Halachah, almost all prayers may not be repeated.

Barchu is not a song, it is a prayer.

Having said that, I guess you can do whatever you want in your own 
congregation, based on what the rabbi and members accept.  

As an aside....last year at Hava Nashira, a young woman from Brooklyn 
(forgive me for not remembering her name) introduced her version of the Shma. 
 She led us in repeating the Shma seven times...it was incredible...each time 
built on the previous one...like some huge powerful group mantra...

Oh well...
