What Rachelle is describing here (putting your music in an envelope and
mailing it to yourself to prove copyright ownership) is what is refered to in
the music business as "poor man's copyright" and it will usually NOT stand up
in court. It is very simple to copyright something and it costs only $20.
Check out the copyright sites that have been mentioned, call the US Copyright
Office or visit their web site. They will send you instructions and the forms
you need. For a sound recording, you need Form SR. All it takes is a minimal
amount of "homework" to find out how to do this.
Music is a business and Jewish music is growing up and becoming a big business
too. You have to know the rules and play fairly if you want to get ahead. I
would encourage anyone who is interested to attend the Performer's Roundtable
that we will be offering once again at the annual CAJE Conference. At this
Roundtable, we discuss the Business of performing and writing including
copyright, marketing, distribution, recording, samplers, etc. We give out
tons of free information for you to read which has invaluable tips on making
it in the Music business. The seminar will be held as part of the CAJE
pre-conference on Sunday, August 8 at Ohio State University. For info on the
Conference, visit the CAJE web site at www.caje.org or call (212) 268-4210 for
an application. CAJE is an experience of a lifetime that you will not soon
forget.
FYI, we also plan to post some music business info at the Jewish Entertainment
Web Site in the future. Check it out at www.jewishentertainment.net.
