[HANASHIR:2622] netiquette

Chevra:

It's time for a brief refresher on net and list etiquette. In order for the
community to function properly, we must all remains sensitive to how what we
do and say affects others.

Some of us like getting dozens of messages each day. Others simply can't
stand a large flurry of messages, particularly ones that are simply one line
responses, attaboys or attagirls, etc.

It is difficult to define what is meaningful and useful. Some would consider
even the most trivial of messages (i.e. one that simply said "amen to that!"
or something similar) of value, while others consider that of little
consequence and therefore of little value.Building online community requires
acceptance of a diversity ofviewpoints, and mutual respect thereof.

Below are some selections from the list welcome message to new members, as
well as some modified version of the "Ten Commandments" for the L-Torah
Liberal Discussion list which I also moderate and co-own with my friend Eric
Simon:

The discussion is NOT moderated. Every message that is sent goes directly to
list subscribers with no approval or editing by the owner. The onus is
therefore on each subscriber to moderate the content of their own postings.

This list is for everyone on the list; therefore, messages, that simply say
"thank you" to another person should be addressed to that other person, and
not to the list.

Discussions ought to relate to Jewish music, songleading, Jewish music
education, the Hava Nashira workshop, the music business and related topics
and comments. Avoid "schmoozing" online on the list. Personal observations,
prayer requests etc. can certainly be appropriate and we ask only that you
exercise appropriate judgement in determining when it is so.

Thou shalt use an accurate subject line. If the subject changes, so should
the subject line. If you receive hanashir as a digest, don't just do a
"reply", because that will cause the subject of your message to be "Re:
hanashir digest' and not the individual message to which you are responding.

Please make space for other voices. Participate actively, but limit your
participation to ensure that others can also have a chance to speak. This
can include not responding to every subject, not sending in more than three
posts in a day, or not posting on a particular subject when your view has
already been expressed. Read ahead to see that someone else hasn't already
answered the question. If a conversation on a topic has turned into a
dialogue with one other person, consider continuing it in private, off the
list. Also, you may or may not notice this in your own e-mail reading, but
when someone posts too often, or posts really long messages, people start
deleting that person's messages without reading them.

Please show respect for people with whom you may disagree, whether on the
list or in the Jewish community. This is an important part in making this
list a comfortable place to raise questions and to speak personally.

Please translate all but the most common Hebrew words that you may use in
your message. As people on this list come from different backgrounds, many
have limited knowledge of the transliterated Hebrew words you use.

Please format your message on lines of at most 80 characters (preferably 76
or less), and make use of white space to keep your messages more readable.
Keep your signature file down to at most four lines. Long signatures take up
lots of wasted space, and tend to be annoying. Some people pay for their
email.

Please quote others' posts only to the extent needed. It's rarely necessary
to include someone else's post in its entirety. Reproduce only the portion
that's relevant to your response, or else paraphrase.

Thou shalt NEVER promulgate a virus warning, urban legend, scam, etc. upon
the list.

This list recognizes and respects copyrights. We ask that all
subscribers do the same. In addition, we ask that proper
attributions to composers, lyricists and sources, when known
be used. If you publish your own work on the list, we strongly
recommend you add a copyright notice to it.

We recognize that artists need to make a living, and the
list will permit announcements of new recordings, books, concerts
when phrased in an appropriate manner. Blatant and repeated commercialism
will not be tolerated.

Try to limit posts that might be of limited local interest to only a few
list members. Always consult with the list owner before posting a message
for someone who isn't a list subscriber.

IF YOU THINK YOU ARE GETTING TOO MUCH MAIL
Everytime anyone sends a message, you, a subscriber, will get it. For =
some
people, this is too much mail. There is a way to avoid this however, by
setting your subscription up as a digest. What this will do is combine =
all
the messages into one long message, with a table of contents, which will =
be
sent out at midnight every day. That way, you will only get one message
from the Beth El list per day. You can set your subscription up this =
way by
sending a message to listproc (at) shamash(dot)org, with the following message:
        set hanashir mail digest
If you want to turn off your digest, you can reset it with
        set hanashir mail
