As a well-over-40 music teacher/songleader at our congregation, I've got to
say that while the young students (nursery thru 3rd or 4th grade) and the
"older" congregants (20+) truly enjoy the music, the teenagers are in a world
all their own. (In fact, I have 2 of them at home, who both informed me
several years ago that they don't "do" Debbie Friedman music, despite the fact
that they hear me singing the likes of it all the time.)
There may be some truth to the idea that youth-groupers relate most readily to
someone closer to their own age, but with any luck, they'll snap out of it at
some point and recognize that good music is good music, regardless of the age
of the singer. (In other words, I'm hoping my own kids will come around
eventually!)
