[HANASHIR:2428] RE: "Politics & Social Justice" Songs

Dear Ros,
While I'm still rather inexperienced at both song leading and Hanashir, I
may have a few thoughts for you for the study group. Do you have a copy of
the UAHC book Shireiu: Our Songs? In the back it lists quite a few songs
under "Songs of Social Action." It lists several songs from Reform
sources, but also some more traditional, plus quite a few folk songs.
 Here's a sample:
"Bayom Hahu" (2 versions listed--one by Lisa Silverstein and Peter Tobias
        and one by Barry Kanarek)
"Blowing in the Wind" (Bob Dylan)
"Day is Done" (no composer given)
"Hold Fast to your Dreams" (Words by A.B. Yehoshua, Chorus by Langston
Hughes, adapted by Jeff Klepper)
"If I had a Hammer" (Lee Hayes and Pete Seeger)
"Im Ein Ani Li Mi Li" (Debbie Friedman is listed, though I know Klepper &
Freelander have a version and there are probably others, adapted
        from Pirkei Avot 1:14 and P'sachim, 10:5)
"Let the Heavens be Glad" (Chaim Stern, adapted from Psalm 96:11, 133:11,
Leviticus 25:10)
"Lo Alecha" (Jeff Kelpper & Daniel Freelander adapted from Pirkei Avot
        2:16,15)--a favorite of mine
"Lo Yisa Goy" (From Isaiah 2:4)
"Not By Might" (Debbie Friedman based on Zacharia 4:6)
"Yad B'Yad" (Craig Taubman with a passage from Pirkei Avot 3:21)

Don't know if any of this is what you're looking for, and this is only a
partial list, but if nothing else, something here may help you think of a
song you can use. Good Luck.

Hi to all,

I have been asked to songlead at our Women's Study Group upcoming
"Passover Evening", on the theme of "Politics & Social Justice" ... so I
would appreciate your ideas & suggestions for songs ... as well as their
sources, if you happen to know them.

BTW, any idea when the Hava Nashira applications will be going out?

Thanks in advance,
