[HANASHIR:2343] Re: wages

Chevre-

I have read and digested everyone's comments on this topic and realize that
there are so many varying factors (i.e. location, experience, hours, etc.)
that is is hard to gauge the correct amount of time and money that we might be
worth in a congregational soloist position.

What I can tell you, from a recent experience, is that no two congregations
have the same expectations or job descriptions to compare to each other. Often
we might be asked to perform other "congregational" or "pastoral" tasks as
well as music. Also, there may be teaching responsibilities and/or community
things they might want us to do as well.

Location of the congregation (geographically) plays a role too. If the shul is
well off financially (so to speak) they may have more resources to this end.
Conversely, a synagogue in an isolated community may think this is VERY
important to fund properly (with alot of $) and be willing to pay very well.
Many times this is not the case however.

Since this is a "nebulus" realm we are discussing, I feel that we have to
represent what we can bring to the synagogue fairly. I agree that we shouldn't
undersell ourselves at all, by the same token, we must continue, and have a
responsibility to better ourselves musically and Jewishly, in order to enhance
whatever experience we are undertaking.

There are probably more scenarios, and each one is different. The thing I'm
sure of is that we perform a valuable role no matter where we are, and that
should not be fogotten. There still aren't enough music people out "there",
wherever "there" is. Whether you are a Cantor, soloist, songleader, music
teacher, or whatever. We need to value our talents properly so other will too.
