[HANASHIR:2323] Re: What is a cantorial soloist worth?



I answered Linda privately at first, but feel I should  respond to Brian's
message and the figures he suggested.  I don't know where you live, Linda,
and you're right about location being a factor.  But in general you cannot
compare soloist fees to teaching fees.  You should also consider that
providing your own accompaniment means an accompanist does not need to be
hired.  Brian may know more about the synagogue where you are singing, but I
think that the range he quoted is low and that the upper figure should be
only the starting point.

That being said, the fact exists that there are numerous underfunded
religious institutions which understandably rely on the generosity of their
musical talent.   There are also good arguments for getting something
started and building on it. 

We are fortunate to be doing work so personally meaningful that the hours
and hours of preparation don't seem onerous, but it is also important to
remember that our talents and skills are unique and specialized.  My message
is:  let's not undervalue ourselves.
