[HANASHIR:2276] Tu B'Shevat Song Ideas

I've pretty much been an observer of this list, and am now going to jump in
the water and participate. I've loved reading all of the posted emails and am
thinking about going to Hava Nashira for the first time and am very excited
about it!!!

Please forgive the lateness of it, though it's never too late to add songs to
your files....also want to mention that I plan to use Karen Durlester's new
"Tu B'Shevat Cha-Cha" for our seder tomorrow night....it is a great song and I
recommend it to all. Am hoping to get a copy of the Tree Song that so many
have mentioned. Thanks.....Ellen Allard

1. Julie Silver's "Shir Chadash" on her "Walk With Me" recording has worked
well at our Tu B'Shevat seder. Lyrics below. Though not specifically about
trees, and even a bit of a stretch in terms of relating to the holiday.....it
is about all the earth singing a song of praise to G-d. Great for group
singing. Think it's in a songbook of hers as well probably can get through
SoundsWrite.

2. I've written a Tu B'Shevat song as yet unrecorded that works well with
little ones....it is called "The Birthday of the Trees" and it has lots of
motions in it that are actually solicited from the kids. If you're interested,
send me your name and address or fax number if you need it in a hurry and I'll
send you a copy. Lyrics below.

3. My husband and I released a recording last year called Sing Shalom: Songs
for the Jewish Holidays. It has a Tu B'Shevat song called "The Fifteenth of
Shevat" that has a very singable chorus though the verses have more
complicated lyrics and probably are better done as a solo. Lyrics below.

4. We also use our song (from the same recording) "Thank You" for the seder.
Lyrics below.

SHIR CHADASH
words: psalm 96; music Julie Silver

Shiru L?Adonai kol ha-aretz
Shiru L?Adonai shir chadash
Shiru L?Adonai kol ha-aretz
Shiru L?Adonai shir chadash.

Sing unto G-d all the earth a new song
I will sing unto G-d a new song
Sing unto G-d and we?ll all sing along
All the earth a new song unto G-d.

Shiru L?Adonai kol ha-aretz
Shiru L?Adonai shir chadash
Shiru L?Adonai kol ha-aretz
Shiru L?Adonai shir chadash.

All the earth a new song unto G-d.

THE BIRTHDAY OF THE TREES

Clap hands for the birthday, for the birthday of the trees
You're all invited to the party for the birthday
Come on over if you please
We'll celebrate the way the branches touch the sky and that is why we
Clap hands for the birthday for the birthday of the trees.

(Stamp feet for the birthday etc.; Shout hooray for the birthday etc....)

THE FIFTEENTH OF SHEVAT

We?ll sit around the table on the 15th of Shevat
We?ll have a special seder for the blessings we have got
We?ll eat different fruits and nuts and though it seems like quite a lot
This is how we celebrate Tu B?Shevat.

In the middle of the month under a full moon you will find
The seder is divided into parts four of a kind
The numeral of which I speak specifically designed
To signify the seasons of the year we keep in mind.

Chorus:

Tu B?Shevat, the birthday of the trees
Tu B?Shevat, come join us if you please.

Our seder starts at nightfall when the stars they do appear
Our friends and family join us at this festive time of year
Our voices rise together for the blessings loud and clear
Tu B?Shevat we share our holiday ?avec plaisir?.

Lovely glowing candlelight and flowers in full bloom
Lovely bowls of fruit so many nuts we will consume
Lovely shades of wine to drink with others in the room
When the seder?s finished, our lives will resume.

Chorus

Another simple way to celebrate go out and plant a tree
It?s a simple way to celebrate in your locality
Or simply plant a tree in Yisrael, don?t you agree
It?s important, it?s a mitzvah of the first degree.

Please remember that the trees are so important to us all
Remember too the plants and animals all large and small
Remember to take care of everything keep on the ball
>From Tel Aviv to Paris from Detroit to Montreal.

Chorus

We?ll sit around the table on the 15th of Shevat
We?ll have a special seder for the blessings we have got
We?ll eat different fruits and nuts and though it seems like quite a lot
This is how we celebrate Tu B?Shevat.

THANK YOU

Chorus:
Thank you, thank you, thank you for the blessings that we share today
Thank you, thank you, thank you for the goodness in our lives.

Thank you G-d for the sun and the moon and the starts that shine so bright
Thank you G-d for giving us a world full of beautiful light. Chorus

Thank you G-d for the food we eat, for the water that flows on our land
Thank you G-d for giving us a world so remarkably grand.Chorus

Thank you G-d for the love and the peace and the joy we have everyday
Thank you G-d for giving us a voice with which we can say.Chorus

"I firmly believe that we humans are ALL born musicians (and artists, and
poets, and creators...) There is a proverb from southern Africa that says, "If
you can walk, you can dance; if you can talk, you can sing." We should stop
thinking of music as a spectator sport and reclaim it as our birthright. In
this way we'll discover our inner power as well as a great source of joy."
