[HANASHIR:2074] Torah chant

Just curious - do those of you laypeople who chant Torah at your
synagogues do so directly from the Torah (no trope signs)?  I am kind of
interested in learning Torah trope - but I can't imagine getting good
enough to chant it without the symbols.  Do some Torah chanters use a
chumash when they go up to the bimah?
