[HANASHIR:2001] New book

Hello,

I realize that promoting my new book is a possibly erroneous use of the
list, but I've considered the following reasons why this would be ok before
the actual promotion so you can read them and if you still feel used in
some way, you can delete and move on.

REASONS WHY ITS OK TO SEND THIS MESSAGE TO THIS LIST.
1) I am a Jewish Music Teacher
2) My new book was written while visiting Janeen Kobrinsky, a fellow Hava
Nashir alum. in Fargo, North Dakota.
3) The rabbi at the temple here in Los Angeles where I am the music teacher
used to be the rabbi at the temple in Fargo.
4) This same Rabbi plays the piano
5) The piano is a musical instrument
6) The word for Poem and the word for Song, in Hebrew, are the same.
7) You're my friends
8) I'll give you a dollar

O.K. If you've gotten to this point, I'd like to now continue on with the
announcement of my new book, "Mowing Fargo" (Thank you for shopping)

---------------
Dear Everyone,

I'm writing to announce the publication of my new book "MOWING FARGO: The
Poet's Experience in Fargo, North Dakota." (Sacred Beverage Press) All
poems written during a trip to the glorious Dakota nestled south of the
ever looming threat of Canadian invasion, and also north of the rarely
hostile South Dakota.

I'll be reading from the book this Sunday December 20 hosted by the Valley
Contemporary Poets. It starts at 6:30 pm, and includes an open reading
which anyone is free to participate in. Also featured this evening is
L.A.'s premiere poet ELLYN MAYBE and a special tribute to KATHLEEN HIETALA.

The VCP reading happens the third Sunday of every month at the Cal. Fed
Bank Building in Canoga Park, California on Topanga Canyon Blvd., just
south of Sherman Way. (101 north to Topanga Cyn North. Right on Topanga.
U-Turn at Sherman Way. Right into the bank parking lot. The reading is in
their community room.)

Free Sample Poems (It's the American Way)

SELECTIONS FROM SECTION 1: FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA
In which a young boy who's not so young if you were to check his
identification which you should do just to be safe travels to the Norwegian
stronghold where Americans, Canadians, Jews, and the insane live together
mainly through means of the exchange of third party checks.

       MORE FLAGS THAN NORMAL

       There are Five American Flags
in front of the Fargo, North Dakota Airport.
       This is in case
       one of them breaks
       or you forget
       you're not in Canada
       anymore.

       A LOT OF SALSA

At Juano's mexican food restaurant in Fargo
the waitress brought so many bowls of salsa
we had to finish our lunch in Minnesota.

SELECTIONS FROM SECTION 2: THE KOBRINSKYS
In which the author, previously a young boy, tells the tales of the members
of the often benevolent and deliciously insane Kobrinsky family who he
lived with on one of their many waterbeds in their house on the Red River,
which serves to keep Minnesota out of Fargo, North Dakota.

       THE SECOND FLOOR KOBRINSKY TOILET

       No one ever flushes
       the second floor Kobrinsky toilet.
       The floating horrors
       one finds become less surprising
       as the days progress
       and the Kobrinsky boys
       mill about in the hallway
       bumping into each other muttering
       It's not me
       It's not me

       NATHAN KOBRINSKY

       The waitress asks Nathan Kobrinsky
if he would like anything to drink.
       "Life Insurance,"
       says Nathan Kobrinsky.

SELECTIONS FROM SECTION 3: CHRISTINA
In which the author, now an attractive young man, and nice Jewish Boy, woos
an attractive young girl, who in turn woos him back which leads to a great
deal of co-wooing in five of the woo-iest days and nights you can imagine.

       PRAIRIE HOSPITALITY

You are driving me through the Prairie,
       gravel roads
       fields of harvestables
       and the occasional structure
       made by human beings.
I am miles from anything I know
       and even farther from home.

       You have worked this land,
       know it intimately.
So when you stop the car
(In the middle of somewhere, I'm sure)
and say "I think we should make out now"
       I can only assume
it's the right thing to do.

       REMEMBERING HOW TO SHOWER

       Thirty years showering by myself
You'd think I'd remember how to do it
       But back home
       after five days with you
       I stare at the soap
       wondering how to apply it
       without your hands
