.... and as one who in the past has kvetched about frivolous messages,
my $0.02 remains that a self-policing community remains just that:  a
*community*.  A functional community requires that its members exercise
self restraint for the good of the whole, which redounds to the benefit
of each individual member in turn.  I'll bet we ask our
students/congregants not to talk during the Amida, y'know?  *ANY*
functioning community requires self restraint: classrooms, synagogues,
discussion groups, chevruta, towns, cities, families.  So I will
continue to gently, respectfully request that community members *think*
before pressing that "Send" key, and ask themselves if the message is
really something the whole list (or even a significant fraction) will
benefit from reading.
