Felicia et al,
I believe that music existed long before the science of music existed...ie:
people were creating music before there was musical notation to clarify the
specifics...also I understand that many singer/songwriters in our field and
others create music in this same way, composing songs in their heads or
with instrument in hand. Often time the science of it coming later. I
know that not everyone does this, and I also agree that musical notation is
a fine way to transmit music from one to another...but perhaps not any more
or less so than picking up songs by ear.
I know that my favorite Jewish music composer created most of her
(or..umm...his...no need for names) without knowledge of the science of
music, but rather with a passionate gift of the artistry of it.
