[HANASHIR:1550] reading music

I have found that there are many talented musicians who cannot read a note
of music. And there are excellent sight readers who really don't make the
music come off the page. While I have benefitted from a University music
program, I was making music by ear before my training began and remain
convinced that if it has to be one or the other -- a great ear or music
reading skill -- the ear wins over every time. I have always been struck
by the fact that in cultures where there is a strong oral tradition (and no
conservatories), the complex rhythms are next to impossible to notate and
extremely challenging for highly trained western musicians to learn.
