Don't feel bad - I have absolutely no clue what these guys are talking about!
I'm sure it doesn't help that I never learned to read music, which I'm not
sure is a blessing or a curse. Like you, I learn things by ear from tape or
CD. It usually works just fine for me, and I've developed a strong "musical
memory", but is often a disadvantage when playing with other musicians who
must use charts. I also have difficulty in transposing chords on the fly - I
can always just move the capo up a fret or two, but I have to tell my bass
player what key I'm playing in. (Let's see, an Am chord capo'd up three frets
is...) Definitely a goal for this year - to at least learn the basics.
