And with great thanks to God for the gifts of a good ear as well as parents
who insisted on several years of formal "training", some of us are lucky
enough to be able to do it either way! Because of my "phonographic memory"*,
I never became a good sightreader (for piano) but on the other hand, once I
slowly read thru a piece of music once(usually a melody line with chords
above), I never have to look at it again! (well, ok, maybe twice). I don't
mean to say this with conceit... just wanted to point out that not everyone
who learns music more easily by ear is "untrained"!

* I coined that phrase as a child... my piano teacher from 5th - 12th grade,
who was slightly senile, used to ask me EVERY week whether I had a
photographic memory, because I never looked at the music and always played by
memory. And EVERY week I'd say, NO, I have a PHONOgraphic memory! Seems my
kids have inherited it too, at least my oldest. He hears a song or piece of
music in my car ONE time, and 3 weeks later I hear him humming it in the
shower (or wherever) note for note!

And Judy, I admire YOUR ability to quickly transcribe music from a tape! It
takes me forever to get notes down on paper!!! I guess we all have our
fortes (and our pianos - ha ha) boy, am I tired... TGIC (thank God it's
Cheshvan - catch up time!)

take care,
Raquel
P.S. sorry to bore the whole list with this letter to judy!
