[HANASHIR:1499] RE: Andy of Mayberry

Before someone goes off on a tangent about using Kodaly or some other
methodology for representing music in email, let me steer the conversation
away from that rather irrelevant and outdated concept. Let's think 90's, OK?

The issue, Rich, is not whether it is possible, for it surely is. The issue
is, how necessary is it to maintain the lowest common denominator in terms
of what the subscribers to this list can utilize.

While the technology proceeds apace, do all on this list have computers that
have sound cards and speakers that can do justice to a digitized recording,
do they all have current version of the RealAudio player, etc?

When I referred to my wife's "Rainbow" song a while back, I did include URL
where one could find digitized samples. That's a simple solution. For those
with the technology. One site with her songs (our homemade site) used a
simple .wav file, which almost any computer can play, the other site (Tara)
uses RealAudio streaming technology.

Sheet music can be scanned and digitized and made available (although there
are copyright issues to deal with here.)

Scanned notation or audio files can be attached to email or embedded in HTML
style email (but not everyone uses that or can receive it.)

There is no giant digital archive of contemporary Jewish liturgical
music...yet. And we'd need permission from all the copyright owners to
create it.

One of my goals is to see that. The web-site still talks about the
"Meta-Songster" project, which is the first step in creating an online
archive.

But we are talking about months of effort to digitize, organize a web-site,
etc. Do I hear any volunteers?

I've been getting a kick out of our conversation concerning Steve's Eyn
Keloheynu. in that it offers a perfect illustration of the difficulties in
communicating musical ideas in this format. I wonder if anyone more
knowledgeable in the ways of instant communication could suggest a possible
way out of this situation. I don't know if the solution has to do with
attatching a document in musical notation, or somehow sharing midi files,
but
I know that there's a better way to communicate melodic ideas.

Is anyone interested in starting a dialog on this topic?

PS I'm now at a new email address, "rglauber (at) aol(dot)com" and I'm
delighted to
be
back on this list.
