I am, as they say, the proverbial expert on this subject. Audio engineering
is one of the many responsibilities of the profession I have had for the
last 20 years or so.
There is no one "best" answer, but as a professional, I would highly
recommend the Roland series of keyboard amp/speakers. Although best suited
to use for keyboards, they are capable of reproducing a vocal input with
reasonable clarity as well.
On the cheap end, the Roland KC100 (list $450, street about $415) is a
capable lightweight unit with four 1/4 inputs and one xlr (mic) input. It
weighs under 30 lbs.
You can step up to the KC 300 or KC 500 for more power at a higher price.
For vocal mics, yes, the Shure 58 has been a workhorse, but it doesn't have
particularly great specs. If you go with a Shure, get the Beta 58, which has
higher output.
Carole, consider as a keyboardist, a headset style microphone. Any one of
the following models will do:
(listed cheap to more expensive)
Audio Technica ATM 75
Countryman Isomax Headset Mic
Crown CM 311A or 312A
Beyer TGX 30 or 35
In handhelds, consider the
Shure Beta 58A
Electro-Voice EV N/D 367 (especially suited for female voice)
Beyer Dynamic TGX 60
AKG C535 EB
I strongly recommend contacting:
Full Compass Systems, Inc in Madison, Wisconsin
(800) 356-5844
for great mail order prices (and working with a Jewish owned audio dealer.)

Can anybody recommend a good-sounding portable sound system, that can
handle both a mike and a keyboard, not super-expensive or terribly
heavy? Any suggestions will be appreciated!
Thanks!
Carole
