Carol,

A few years ago I wrote a children's version of Avinu Malkeinu for use in
our Katoni High Holiday Services.  The children in these services are pretty
young, toddlers up to first grade.  They hear the tune in the regular
services and most of the words are in English.  In teaching the song we
discuss how G-d is like a father (parent) and a King (this is interesting
since our children have never lived under a monarchy).  We also talk about
Mitzvot - the only other Hebrew word in the song.  Anyone who likes it is
welcome to it.

but sometimes we misbehave.
We try to be good, but sometimes we can't.
