I was a member of Pizmon at the time of its first recording and can
confirm that the "Sloop John B" Adon Olam was intended for "personal
enjoyment or group singing" rather than for liturgical use. (Probably
also the case with the "Under the Boardwalk" Adon Olam on the newest
Beat'achon recording, and the "Blue Moon" Adon Olam performed by Safam).

With Shabbat Zmirot such as Dror Yikra, however, there seems to be more
of an "anything goes" approach even in some rather traditional
communities -- while the Zmirot are religious songs, the fact that they
are for home use rather than synagogue use may make musical borrowing
less problematic.

I'm still processing erik's point about mass communication making today's
musical borrowing qualitatively different from the musical borrowing of
the past - a good point, I think, which is helping me further develop my
position on this subject.
