dear Karen...dear Rachel...
good response rachel...and I believe you're quite right about the music
being vital to building a sense of identity...detachment from existing
(ie. our "grownup" society) and striking out with a new voice. We did
it...our parents didn't get it...now they're doing it and i have to tell
you...I hate the rap/violence/nasty/foul-mouthed stuff. I have a 6th
grader, an 8th grader, a 9th grader a 12th grader, a senior in
college...a one off doing culinary school...they all flow in and out of
my music/old music/new music...beatles....baez...joni mitchell...leonard
cohen...dylan...one even plays in the youth symphony here while
listening to all the other crap...
and yet...I've started a choir at our temple and one third of it are
13/14 yr olds...and they come just because they love it....go figure
janeen
and as I said a few days ago...thank god for the kindergarteners...cause
they know how to be themselves and how not to be cool
