Dear Sara,
I agree with your position. I think teens are more receptive to one of their
"own" leading songs than taking direction from an adult. Your friend's point
is valid, too, as there are some really charismatic rabbis and cantors out
there who do get kids to sing and participate.
The bottom line is probably the personality of each individual. There are two
right answers to the question. What we must keep in mind, though is that if
we don't work on a corps of youth being trained as leaders, there will be no
future musically knowledgable, fun rabbis who make kids want to sing.
