Hi!

I found your lyrics in an old book on my shelf: Songs of Phil Ochs,
Appleseed Music Inc, 1964.
Now that pretty much dates me... Come to think of it that's when I began
playing guitar....

Good Luck,
Ilana Rosansky

         There But for Fortune

   G Cm G Cm
Show me a prison; Show me a jail
                   Em Am D
Show me a prison man whose face is growing pale
        Em C Am
And I'll show you a young man with many reasons why
Bm G Am D (last time
resolves to G)
And there but for fortune may go you or I

2) Show me an alley; show me a train
Show me a hobo who sleeps out in the rain
And I'll show you a young man with many reasons why,
There but for fortune may go you or I.

3) Show me the whiskey that stains on the floor,
Show me a durnken man as he stumbles out the door
And I'll show you a young man with many reasons why
And there but for fortune may go you or I.

4) Show me a country where the bombs had to fall,
Show me the ruins of buildings once so tall,
And I'll show you a young land with so many reasons why,
And there but for fortune may go you or I, [you] or I.
