I just thought you guys might be interested in a brief music report of the
Limmud conference. Having been privileged now to have experienced CAJE and
Limmud there are interesting comparisons to be made. For those who don't
know Limmud is a British Education and culture conference inspired by CAJE.
It is growing every year and this year was experienced by a record 1450
people. Whereas at CAJE the entertainment is a really central and important
part of the programme at Limmud it is still in its infancy. In the past
America has contributed a fine range of artists including:-
Ketzev - '93
Debbie Friedman - '94
Jeff Klepper - '95
No-one - '96
This year probably presented the broadest and most exciting range of Jewish
music yet witnessed at a Limmud conference.
This year we were very fortunate to have Neshama Carlebach and Sam Glaser
join us. Neshama brought Seth Glass along as her musician who turned out to
be a great performer in his own right (with a Lauden (Irish) guitar, I'm
stunningly impressed when I find Americans with Laudens) All three were
very warmly received. In addition we had a Klezmer band, a Greek Sephardi
band, Red Sea Blue (that's mine), Nimrod Borenstein (a classical composer)
and Judith Sheridan (a classical singer). It was really great. Of course
there was very late night jamming for those willing to forgo Shacharit. As
well as the standard sing-a-long, song-writing, music and tefilla and
niggunim etc.
It was really great. If you are interested in attending a future Limmud
conference just contact me. It always takes place over Christmas. I have to
say that Stamford University just beats rainy Manchester as a venue, but
you know this is England.
Happy 1998 to everyone.
Regards
Jess
