Copyright Issues

Rich:

You took the words out of my mouth. The correct answer to the Julie Silver
question is: buy her songbook. It's available from Tara or Soundswrite.

As professionals, we should own professional tools-and that includes printed
music. If you are capable of transcribing it yourself, more power to you. But
if you choose to share it with others, that's between you and your God. Jewish
educators and songleaders are notorious for their often blatant disregard of
copyright. It's a shanda. Now, copyright law does make certain special
provisions for liturgical music when performed in liturgical settings. So we
have some leeway. Note, however, that the industry trade organization for camps
(including Jewish ones) has an agreement with ASCAP and BMI-and it is a
negotiated license with strict provisions.

On the other hand...

As professionals, we should also help each other out when we can. But we help
each other best when we steer us down the paths of righteous behavior.
