What an interesting group of people we have on this list - good idea, Adrian!
I'm Rachel Gurevitz, from Wembley (home of the famous stadium), London,
UK. Most of the time I'm a researcher, doing a PhD at University College
London on children and environmental education. Music has always been a big
hobby, but not really jewishly until 1994. Debbie Friedman came over to the
UK and taught at our big annual Jewish residential conference, LIMMUD, and
it was an *amazing* experience.
A group of us talked about getting together to form the kind of informal
singing group that we had had with Debbie - there was nothing apart from
formal choirs in the UK. Almost by accident I ended up as administrator
and a few months later, as the main songleader. Our group, Shir B'Yachad
meets once a month, and inbetween times I songlead at conference sessions,l
progressive women's events and run adult song and spirituality sessions at
progressive synagogues. This year was my first Hava Nashira and I'm counting
the days 'till the next one.
