To: hanashir (at) shamash(dot)org

Hello All -

In catching up with past postings from this list I see people asking frequently
for music from biblical texts, holocaust, social action, life cycle themes,
etc. and I wondered if you know about the music of Cantor Richard Silverman,
who has written in all these areas, and more. When I first started collecting
music whose texts came from the bible I contacted Richard and was amazed at his
HUGE repertoire of original, singable melodies. He was teaching songleaders at
Camp Swig years ago, making sure that they had useable material. You all know
his Eitz Chayim-Tree of Life and Mi Chamocha (ya ba bim bam) classics. It has
been difficult to get hold of sheet music for his music - recently Cantor Bruce
Benson helped Richard bring out a songbook of 62 of his compositions with
melody line and guitar chords, keyboard accompaniment for nine of them, and 14
pieces for choir or duets. If anyone is interested you can find out more about
this new songbook at:
 http://soundswrite.com/swstore8b.html#silverman A wonderful resource!!!

Happy Purim!

Hi Everyone,

Several months back I posted to the list for ideas and guidence about doing a
Havdalah Bat Mitzvah, and I thank y'all for the responses.

The event occurred this past weekend, and I'm happy to report that it was a
lovely ceremony. It started at 4:30 (during Shabbat) and ended around 6:00 in
perfect time for a touching Havdalah service.

I did "Miriam's Song", Craig's "Ein Kamocha", Dropkin's "R'tzei", and Mah
Tovu's "Parent's Prayer" (which fits in perfectly after the parent's speech),
along with "Hinei Ma Tov", "Shalom Rav", "Oseh Shalom", and "Etz Chaim Hi".
After the Bat Mitzvah component, we transitioned into Havdalah with Debbie's
"Havdalah Bruchot", "Elihahyu Hanavi", and Kol B'Seder's "Shavua Tov".

The congregation is very small and shares space in a local church. They have
no cantor.

Anyway, I just wanted to say "Thank You" for the help and support.

B'Shalom,

Scott Shuster

Chaverim:

I would like to take this opportunity to commend Randee for understanding the
spirit and intention of the recently propagated "netiquette" rules for the
list. As some others have done, even after the netiquette guidelines were
posted Randee could have posted a simple "commercial style" announcement. She
chose, instead, to truly observe the spirit of this community and present us
with information written, as requested, in the form of a personal message.

We all owe a debt to Randee, Joel, Velvel and others who are out there trying
to scratch together a living selling the CDs we make and the songs we write. If
Randee, whose commercial interest in promoting the products her company sells
is necessary for her parnassa, can take the time to present her promotion in
such a personal manner, then surely we all can.

And thank you also for carrying this new songbook, and thanks to Cantor Bruce
Benson for working with Cantor Silverman to get so many of Silverman's
wonderful songs transcribed. And for making it possible for people to find and
purchase sheet music for individual songs by Debbie Friedman and others.

Without wishing to slight any of the others involved in Randee's business,
about which the same could be said, I'll close this message by using Randee's
own words about the Silverman songbook to describe the service that Randee and
Soundswrite provide: "A Wonderful Resource!!!"

Thank you, Randee.

Adrian

Hi!

Just the other day I got a couple of different e-mails regarding the 2nd half
of Sh'ma and why we say it softly. I had heard both stories before. Today,
the subject came up and my director and I looked at each other because we knew
the answer, it just wasn't coming out of our mouths. I went home and
discovered that I deleted the e-mails regarding this subject. Would anyone
mind repeating the message? Or for that matter, send me your own thoughts on
the subject. I want to teach my kids why we do it. Thanks so much.
